First off, you CAN do this! I know there are probably a million what ifs and how do I do this, this, and that running through your mind about starting a blog. But let me tell you, it is definitely possible to make money blogging online.
But take that fear and let it motivate you because you will only regret it if you don’t try. I started this blog with absolutely no knowledge of how the blogging world worked.
One night on impulse I signed up for a website host, picked out a website name, and I told myself somehow I was going to make this work. And it was the best thing I’ve ever done!
My motivation for starting this blog was to build the life I’ve always wanted to live. Being my own boss and fully supporting myself on a self employed income.
And within two months of blogging, I went from 400 to 4,000 page views using my winning Pinterest strategy! Not only that but I also started making money too! You can check out my second month blogging post for all my money making excitement.
Once you get your rhythm down, nothing can stop you from making your blog a success. I know it sounds crazy to just start writing some stuff online and see it make money so quickly. But it’s possible.
Yea you have to put in work to make your blog a success. But if you love what you do is it really even working? Nope! It’s just something you love to do that just so happens to make you money.
So let’s dive in and get ya started so you can start the path to your dream life!

Whoa Whoa Whoa! Real quick, if you are completely new to the blogging world and need a crash course in some of the blogging basics and lingo, I have a post devoted to that to help you out!
Free Hosting Vs. Self Hosting
Okay, I know. When you’re just starting out why wouldn’t you use free hosting?
My number one reason? You don’t actually own the content you are creating when you’re using a free website host. Not to mention certain rules will prohibit you from monetizing your blog posts. Which means less money!
I don’t know about you but I don’t want to hinder my money flow! Plus what looks more professional, example.web.com or example.com?
You automatically seem more credible when you have your own .com website name. Which means people are more likely to listen to you and turn into long term subscribers and generate sales later on.
I tend to feel a little iffy when I see a website that doesn’t have its own domain name. Especially if I’m going to be buying something through the website.
I highly recommend making the very small investment (it’s less than $4 a month!) to get yourself a website host.
Get A Website Host
This is pretty much how your website even exists on the internet. Without a website host, you would have no way of creating your content.
A web host is the foundation of your blog. It keeps that baby up and running.
I love BlueHost because they start at just $3.95 a month! Ummmm can we say affordable?! No breaking the bank to make your dream of running your own blog and making money a reality!
So why BlueHost?
- FREE Domain Name (oh yeah!)
- FREE Site Builders (woop woop!)
- 24/7 Support (So important for those 2 am website dilemmas)
- One Click WordPress Installation (keep reading for more info on this)
To be honest, when I first signed up for BlueHost I didn’t even know what it was or why I needed it. Think of your host as your foundation. You can’t build a house without a foundation and you can’t build a website without a host.
If you want to learn about some more website host options, I have a whole post with other possibilities as well.
Okay so let’s get your website!
Go to BlueHost.com and click Get Started Now. It will bring you to a page with three different sign-up plan options. I recommend choosing the basic plan because it’s only $3.95 a month and you get all the major necessities you need to get started.
Now it’s time to name your brand new website! Let your creative juices flow! But don’t worry, if you can’t think of one right now, you can still get your FREE domain name later when you think of a good one.
Now just put in all your account information, verify the plan you want to choose, and add any additional items you’d like along with your plan.
I recommend at least getting the domain privacy protection (it’s only $.99 a month) so it will protect your personal information from being shared with marketing companies who will call you a thousand times with solicitations. Trust me I learned this one the hard way.
Install WordPress WordPress Is Installed Automatically!
This is the program you will be using to write all of your awesome content! Remember when I said you want a self hosted website so you own all of your content? Well that’s the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org software.
One you use with free hosting, the other you install with the host and website you already OWN! Having a website host is 100% worth the investment if you want to make money blogging online.
Not to mention most of the blogging tutorials out there are shown using WordPress because that is what the majority uses.
BlueHost now has the WordPress software already installed for you to make your life even easier! So once you are finished signing up you are automatically ready to start creating content on the WordPress platform.
If you’re a little confused with some of the new blogging terms, I made a post explaining some common terms for the blogging newbie (and how I grew my Pinterest account to get tons of blog traffic!).
Get A Theme
Now this is the really fun part, customizing your blog and making it your own personal style. When you look at different blogs, they all have their own fonts, colors, and layouts. That’s exactly what a theme is, a custom design for your blog.
You can start with a free theme already on WordPress however, if you want to have more creative control I recommend investing in a theme that will fit your personal style. This way when you start branding there won’t be anything preventing you from having the style you really want.
Studio Press has TONS of different blog themes to choose from for every possible style out there. I used the Genesis theme as my very first theme because it’s super simple and easy to use if you are just starting out.
Some of the best bloggers in the game use the Genesis Framework because of its awesome SEO power so that is definitely a plus.
I still use the Genesis framework, but I layered one of the great feminine themes from Sugar + Code on top as I got a better grasp on where I wanted my brand to go.
They have some great feminine blog theme options for every niche with step by step directions to make installing the theme super simple.
So How Do I Make Money?
Well you’ve got a ton of options to make money blogging online, but my two favorites when you’re just starting out are Affiliates and Ad networks. Anyone can get signed up with networks, and you don’t even have to have a huge following yet! I signed up for a bunch of programs before I even had my first 100 page views.
Affiliate links allow you to talk about a product you love (so easy!), and in return, the company will PAY YOU for either getting people to their website, or getting new paying customers for them!
While Ad networks allow different companies that may relate to your audience run ads on your blog. In return, you will be paid for allowing those ads to run.
Some of the affiliates I used to get started:
Shareasale– this is my favorite so far! There are a TON of different companies within this network like Checkout 51, Grammarly, and Tailwind so you’re bound to find a company or product you already use and love or one that you’d like to try out and eventually promote.
Amazon Affiliate– I don’t think I know one person who hasn’t bought something off Amazon at least once in their life. Amazon is great because the possibility of products to promote are endless! That laptop case you ordered that you can’t live without? Share it and make money in the process!
I like to come up with a concept for a blog post and start brainstorming the key points I want to make in the article. Then I go through my affiliates and see which ones will best relate to my readers and help solve their problems in any way.
The key phrase there is SOLVE THEIR PROBLEMS. If your audience is terrible at saving money and you show them an app that will do the saving for them, you just solved their problem and generated a sale!
By the way that app actually exists. It’s called Qapital and it’s the best savings app I’ve ever used!
Media.net– An ad network that’s SUPER easy to join if you’re just starting out.
Google AdSense– One of the bigger well-known ad networks in the game.
Something that I learned that is extremely important to remember is that more page views DOES NOT necessarily mean more money. You don’t need to have 50,000 page views a month to make an income. I’ve had some of my highest income when my page views were the lowest.
It’s all about building a relationship with your readers so that they’ll want to listen to you and take your product recommendations. Once you build that relationship, the possibility for income is endless!
