I remember having some seriously frustrating moments when I first decided to start a blog because it was like learning a new language. I would be up to all hours of the night searching for the answers to my many questions.
That’s part of the reason I wrote my blogging newbies crash course after my first month blogging because I knew I couldn’t be the only one struggling to get the hang of things.
The crazy thing is I didn’t realize the huge impact my blog theme had on making my life so much easier. Mostly because I didn’t totally know what I’d even bought or how it helped me in any way. Turns out I had gotten one of the best blog theme frameworks out there and didn’t even know it!
So I’m going to walk you through everything you need to know about blog themes and the one that has created my successful money making blog.
Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. Which means at no extra cost to you, I will be compensated when you use my links (which keeps this blog up and running!). You can read more about our disclosure here.
If you would like to start your own blog (which I highly suggest because it changed my life) I definitely recommend Blue Host to start your blog because It’s only $3.95 a month! Plus you get a free domain name to kick off your brand new blog!
So What The Heck Is The Genesis Framework?
When I described a website host in my how to start a money making blog post I used a house as my example. You can’t build a house without a foundation, and you can’t build a website without a host.
So where does the Genesis Framework fit in exactly? Think of Genesis as your frame and behind the scenes work for your website theme. The structure, the walls, the electrical work, all the basics that keep a house together.
This is what the Genesis Framework also known as the Parent Theme is. It’s all the coding mumbo jumbo that I know most of us bloggers don’t know how to do on our own.
Genesis takes all that nitty gritty stuff and does it all for you so you don’t spend hours trying to figure out how to write a code for a website. I took a coding class in high school and there’s a reason I barely passed. It’s hard! So the fact that Genesis will do all the work for you is such a relief.
But what about all the fun colors and cool website designs? Well we already covered the fact that the Genesis Framework is considered your Parent Theme. And obviously if you’re a parent you have to have a child right?
Think of the Child Theme as the finishing touches on the house. The paint, decor, furniture, all the things that will make your website and blog unique to you.
Your blog essentially becomes multiple different layers that get you the amazing finished product.
1. Website Host (foundation for your blog)
2. Parent Theme (coding that makes your blog run)
3. Child Theme (unique design and blog layout)
Is It Reliable?
This is obviously an important question because when the WordPress software updates will Genesis be able to keep up and update as well? Yes!
Genesis is constantly being maintained by a group of people from StudioPress to ensure your website doesn’t hit any bumps in the road.
Since Genesis is programmed to work with Child Themes, you don’t have to worry about losing any of your customizations when there’s an update. This saves SO much time that I know you probably don’t have to spare.
Unlike some other frameworks, Genesis only comes with the essential plugins (kinda like apps for your blog that do specific things) you truly NEED. This is extremely helpful because you won’t have a bunch of plugins you don’t need slowing down your site.
You can simply add plugins as you go.
Genesis is made ready to work with tons of different plugins that will customize your blog even more. Adding a social media widget, or a gallery image reel to make your blog more unique to you.
Will It Break The Bank?
Nope! That’s the best part about the Genesis Framework. For only $59.95 you get both the Genesis Framework AND a sample Child Theme to get you started. The sample theme is great to start out with if you don’t totally know all your brand details yet.
I used the sample theme for the first few months I started blogging while I tried to figure out my brand and style and it was wonderful!
Simple, clean, and easy to navigate for your readers.
After that the skies the limit when it comes to fun and creative Child Themes that will work alongside your Genesis Framework.
StudioPress has some great theme options that have a live preview so you can experience the theme first hand to see if it’s the right fit for you. Sugar+Code also has some good options for lifestyle blogs which is where I got my current Child Theme.
By the way Sugar+Code is an Etsy store and Etsy is also a great place to look for new blog themes!
What If I Can’t Find A Child Theme For Me?
Now nothing is impossible, but not finding a child theme to fit your style comes pretty damn close.
StudioPress alone has A TON of different child themes to choose from that will fit any and every blog niche out there.
Here are some options to get you started:
Easily Change Your Theme When You Get Bored
Eventually you’ll probably get the itch to switch things up with an updated fresh look for your blog. The great thing is Genesis makes changing themes SUPER easy.
With some other frameworks when you switch themes you lose all the hard work you did on customizing your blog and adding plugins.
But with Genesis, all of your previous info will be saved. This way the most you’ll have to do is rearrange things when you install a new theme.
Create A Flawless Website Design!
Now that you understand all the behind the scenes work to a beautiful blog, it’s time for you to create!
